This water heater heats water in the conventional way. The electric storage-tank water heater heats the water via electric elements. It is more expensive to run than a gas water heater.
Another type of water heater on the market is the hybrid water heater. This operates similarly to an air conditioner, by moving and extracting heat from the surrounding air. The heat is then discharged into the tank, where it is used to heat the water.
The tankless water heater does not have a storage tank and heats the water only as is required. When you turn on the water faucet, cold water travels through a pipe to the tankless heater, where it is heated as it passes through.
