Preparing concrete surfaces for overlays, coatings, stains, or repair materials can be a daunting and time-consuming task that many contractors dread or avoid entirely. However, if you’ve skipped this crucial first step in the procedure, you’ve undeniably learned how important it is to the job’s success. Concrete floor preparation techniques can vary greatly. The type, degree, and significance of preparation required before painting are determined by the state of the coating process, concrete, and application exposure. In addition, the concrete should be clean, dry, and free of dust, surface matter, and oil.
Most types of flooring, including carpets, floorboards, veneers, and tiles, are installed over a concrete slab. It is critical to prepare the surface for these forms of flooring to stick to concrete. The first method of preparation is to use a broom or vacuum cleaner to remove all surface dust and other loose/friable material. These can be done using a sander or wire brush to remove matter from the flooring surface effectively or to rub the surface to provide a “key” for any coating. During the application of epoxy coatings, chemical cleaning strategies can also be used as an alternative to mechanical procedures for preparing concrete floors.
