What Are the Different Types of Patches?

Patches are an excellent way to add flair to your apparel or personal items, but it can be difficult to decide what kind of patch to get. Here’s an overview of the different types of patches that exist.

A woven patch is very thin and can be applied to just about anything. These patches are durable and lightweight and should be stitched on either on all sides or on two opposite sides.

Some woven patches have embroidered borders.

Embroidered patches have a classic look. They’re thicker and firmer than woven patches, but they still have plenty of flexibility. These patches are best applied to thicker fabrics like denim and hoodies. Some embroidered patches feature additional raised materials such as chenille.

Finally, rubber or silicone patches are hard and heavy. While these patches are durable and aesthetically pleasing, they can only be applied to thick, sturdy fabrics due to their weight.

In addition to being made from different materials, patches can be attached to items in multiple different ways. Some patches should be sewn on traditionally, some need to be ironed on, and some attach with velcro. With so many different patch options to choose from, you can surely find one that works for your needs.
